About Cave Run Lake Wildlife Management Area

Cave Run Lake Wildlife Management Area is a significant outdoor recreation and wildlife habitat zone located in Powell and Menifee counties in eastern Kentucky. Centered around Cave Run Lake, a large reservoir formed by the impoundment of the Licking River, the area encompasses approximately 10,000 acres of forested hills, hardwood bottoms, and open waters. Established primarily for flood control and recreation, Cave Run Lake was completed in 1973 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The surrounding management area supports diverse flora and fauna, including mature oak-hickory forests and populations of deer, turkey, and other native wildlife. This area offers year-round fishing opportunities, with species such as largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and catfish thriving in the lake. Visitors can also enjoy over a dozen hiking trails of varying difficulty, mountain biking routes, and multi-use roads weaving through the uplands. Several campgrounds and boat launches provide good access to the shorelines and water activities. Bird watchers may find habitats supporting migratory and resident species, adding to the appeal of the site for naturalists. The combination of water-based and terrestrial recreation makes Cave Run Lake Wildlife Management Area a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts in the region. Its relatively close proximity to towns like Morehead enhances accessibility while preserving a natural setting for immersive wildlife experiences.
